How to Wrap a Column into a Table (or Flatten It) in Excel
One long column of values, and you want it laid out three-across — or a whole table you want flattened back to a single column. That's WRAPROWS and TOCOL, but those are 365-only. Here's the one-click way that works on any Excel.

| One column | Wrapped 3-wide (across rows) | |
|---|---|---|
| A, B, C, | → | A B C |
| D, E, F | → | D E F |
Why the formula is limited
WRAPROWS, WRAPCOLS, and TOCOL do exactly this, but they arrived with dynamic arrays and only exist in Excel 365 and the web — open the file in an older desktop version and the formulas break to #NAME?. Without them, reshaping means selecting blocks and cut-and-pasting them one at a time, which is slow and easy to get out of order. And the spill result is a formula, not values you can freely edit.
The 1-click way — Tellsheet's Reshape Column ↔ Table
Run Reshape Column ↔ Table. Choose Wrap to lay one column out into a set number of columns, or Unwrap to flatten a table back into a single column. Set the fill order — across rows first (like WRAPROWS) or down columns first (like WRAPCOLS). The reshaped data is written to a new sheet as plain values, on any Excel version. Pairs with Transpose and Split Text into Rows.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do this without Excel 365?
Yes — it doesn't use WRAPROWS, so it works on desktop and web, old and new.
Across rows or down columns?
Both are offered — fill each row first, or fill each column first, whichever matches your layout.
Can it flatten a table into one column?
Yes — that's Unwrap, the TOCOL job, reading across rows or down columns as you choose.
Is the result editable?
Yes — it's plain values on a new sheet, not a spill formula, so you can edit any cell.
