How to Remove Empty Columns in Excel (Delete Blank Columns)

Exports love to leave empty columns behind — a gap between fields, a column that once held data, or one that's blank except for a header nobody cleared. Excel has no "delete every empty column" command, so here's the one-click way that drops them all in a single pass, into a fresh sheet.

Why Excel makes this hard

Go To Special ▸ Blanks selects blank cells, not entire empty columns — so on a real export you end up eyeballing the sheet and deleting columns one by one, right-click ▸ Delete, over and over. It's slow, and it's easy to miss a column that looks used because it still carries a leftover header at the top while every cell beneath it is blank. There's simply no built-in "delete every empty column" in Excel.

The 1-click way — Tellsheet's Remove Empty Columns

Select the range and run Remove Empty Columns. Choose whether a column counts as empty when every cell is blank, or when all its data is blank even if a header still sits at the top (ignore header). Tellsheet drops every matching column in one pass and writes the trimmed block to a new sheet, so your original is untouched. It's a deterministic tool — no AI, same result every time — and the natural companion to Delete Blanks, which does the same job for rows.

Frequently asked questions

Can Excel delete all empty columns at once?

No — there's no such command. Go To Special ▸ Blanks selects cells, not whole columns. Remove Empty Columns drops them all in one pass.

What if a column only has a header?

Use the "all data blank (ignore header)" mode — the column counts as empty when every cell below the header is blank.

Does it touch my original sheet?

No — the trimmed block is written to a new sheet, so the original stays exactly as it was.

What about empty rows?

Use the companion tool, Delete Blanks, which removes fully-empty rows the same way.
