How to Do a Fuzzy VLOOKUP in Excel (Typo-Tolerant Match)

Two lists should join, but the names differ by a typo or a stray "Inc" — so VLOOKUP returns #N/A on every near-miss. Here's why exact lookups fail, and the one-click way that tolerates the difference.

Why VLOOKUP can't match near values

VLOOKUP and XLOOKUP only find an exact match (or a sorted approximate one for numbers) and return #N/A the moment a key differs by a single character. So "Microsft", "Acme Inc" and "acme" never line up with their clean counterparts. Microsoft ships a Fuzzy Lookup add-in that can do this, but it's Windows-only, has to be installed and wired to named tables, and is slow and awkward on large lists.

The 1-click way — Tellsheet's Fuzzy Merge

Select your key column and run Fuzzy Merge. Point it at the other table, pick the column to pull back, and it matches typo-tolerant keys — "Microsft" to "Microsoft", "Acme" to "Acme Inc" — writing the result plus a confidence score for each row so you can review the weaker matches. No add-in, works on Windows, Mac and web, and runs on your device. Pairs with VLOOKUP Between Sheets and Fuzzy Match.

Frequently asked questions

Can VLOOKUP handle typos or near matches?

No — it needs an exact match and returns #N/A on the smallest difference. Fuzzy Merge matches near-identical keys and pulls back your column.

What is the confidence score?

A 0-to-1 score of how close the two keys are — "Microsft" to "Microsoft" scores about 0.94 — so you can review or threshold weak matches.

Do I need the Fuzzy Lookup add-in?

No — that add-in is Windows-only and fiddly. Fuzzy Merge is built in and runs on Windows, Mac, and the web.

Does my data leave my computer?

No — the matching runs locally, so nothing is uploaded. Safe for customer and supplier lists.
