Flash Fill Alternative in Excel (Deterministic Split by Example)

Flash Fill guesses from a hidden heuristic, gets edge rows silently wrong, and only exists on desktop. Type the result you want once and Tellsheet learns the pattern, then fills every row the same way.

Why Flash Fill lets you down

Flash Fill (Ctrl+E) is convenient until it isn't: it's non-deterministic, inferring a pattern from your example and silently applying a different guess to rows that don't look quite the same. It only exists on desktop Excel — there's no Flash Fill on Mac's older builds or the web — and it can't be re-run reliably when new rows arrive, so you end up checking every result by hand.

The 1-click way — Tellsheet's Split by Example

Select the column and run Split by Example. Type the result you want for the first row and Tellsheet learns the pattern — split, extract, reorder, recombine, or re-case — then fills a new column for every row. It's a deterministic Flash Fill that runs entirely on your PC, so the same example always produces the same rule and nothing is uploaded. Pairs with Split Names and Extract Text.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from Flash Fill?

Flash Fill guesses with a hidden heuristic that can get edge rows wrong. Split by Example learns one explicit rule from your example and applies it to every row, so it's deterministic.

Does it work on Mac and the web?

Yes — Flash Fill is desktop-only, but Split by Example runs wherever Tellsheet does because it's part of the add-in.

What can it do besides splitting?

From one example it can split, extract, reorder, recombine, or re-case. Show it the output you want and it works out the transformation.

Does it overwrite my data?

No — it writes to a new column and leaves the source alone, so you can review before keeping it.
