How to Convert Numbers to Words in Excel

Writing amounts out in words — for cheques, invoices, or contracts — has no built-in Excel function. Here's the classic VBA-macro way, and a one-click way that also handles currency.

NumberIn words
1250One Thousand Two Hundred Fifty
1000.50One Thousand Dollars and Fifty Cents
42Forty-Two

Method 1 — Microsoft's SpellNumber VBA macro

  1. Press Alt+F11 to open the VBA editor.
  2. Insert > Module, then paste Microsoft's SpellNumber function code.
  3. Back in the sheet, use =SpellNumber(A2).
  4. Save the workbook as .xlsm (macro-enabled) or the code is lost.

Works, but the macro only does US dollars unless you edit it, it can't run in Excel on the web, and macro-enabled files are often blocked by IT policy.

Method 2 — a long nested formula

Formula-only versions exist, but they run to hundreds of characters, are near-impossible to audit, and still don't handle currency wording cleanly. Not recommended for anything you have to maintain.

The 1-click way — Tellsheet

Spell Number writes a column of numbers out in words with no macro and no .xlsm file. Pick plain words (“one thousand two hundred fifty”) or a titled currency amount (“One Thousand Dollars and Fifty Cents”) in USD, GBP, EUR, INR, or BHD. Works on Windows, Mac, and Excel on the web, and runs entirely on your computer. Pairs with Round Numbers and Convert Text to Number.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a function to convert numbers to words in Excel?

No built-in one. The classic route is Microsoft's SpellNumber VBA macro (=SpellNumber(A2)); Tellsheet's Spell Number does it without a macro and adds currency wording.

How do I write a number as a currency amount?

Use Spell Number's currency mode for wording like “One Thousand Dollars and Fifty Cents”, with USD, GBP, EUR, INR, and BHD built in.

Why did my macro disappear?

VBA lives only in .xlsm/.xlsb files and is blocked by default on downloaded files. Saving as .xlsx drops it. An add-in works in any workbook, including the web.

Does it work on Excel for the web?

Yes — Tellsheet runs on Windows, Mac, and the web. VBA macros do not run on the web at all, which is a common reason people switch to an add-in.
